Discover the defining landscapes and cultures of Northern Vietnam on this 7-day journey through Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa and Ninh Binh. From an overnight cruise among Halong Bay’s limestone islands to treks through Sapa’s mountain villages and a peaceful bamboo boat ride in Tam Coc, this itinerary brings together nature, heritage and local life.

Begin in Hanoi before sailing through Halong Bay, visiting Surprising Cave, Titop Island and Luon Cave. Continue by overnight train to Sapa, where scenic valley walks offer encounters with Black H’mong and Dzay communities, rice terraces, waterfalls and traditional village life.

The journey ends in Ninh Binh with the historic temples of Hoa Lu and a boat trip through Tam Coc’s “Three Caves”, followed by shopping time in Hanoi’s Old Quarter and Dong Xuan Market.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1Day 1: Malaysia – Hanoi Arrival

Overnight in Hanoi

Arrive at Noi Bai International Airport and meet the driver for transfer to the hotel.

Standard check-in time is from 2:00 PM. Early check-in is subject to hotel availability and confirmation on arrival. The driver will wait for a maximum of one hour after the arrival flight.

The rest of the day is free at leisure, with optional tours available. Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 2Day 2: Hanoi – Halong Bay Overnight Cruise (B/L/D)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight on Cruise

After breakfast, check out and depart for Halong Bay. On arrival at Tuan Chau Marina, board the cruise, meet the captain and crew, and enjoy a welcome drink and briefing before checking into the cabin.

Enjoy lunch while cruising through Halong Bay.

Visit Surprising Cave, one of the bay’s largest grottos, with thousands of stalactites and stalagmites. Continue to Titop Island, where you may swim or climb to the summit for panoramic views of the bay.

Return to the cruise and enjoy a Sunset Party on the sundeck, followed by a cooking class. Dinner is served onboard.

In the evening, relax, socialise with other guests, play board games or join squid fishing. Overnight in an air-conditioned cabin with private bathroom facilities.

Day 3Day 3: Halong Bay – Hanoi – Night Train to Sapa (B/L)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch | Overnight on Night Train

Enjoy breakfast onboard as the cruise heads towards the Natural Preservation Zone.

Take part in kayaking around Luon Cave. Return to the cruise to relax and prepare for check-out; luggage can be stored onboard.

Continue cruising through the bay, passing Ba Hang Fishing Village, Dog Islet and other limestone formations. Enjoy lunch before disembarking at Tuan Chau Marina between approximately 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM.

Return to Hanoi and enjoy free time until the evening. At approximately 9:00 PM, board the overnight train to Lao Cai.

Day 4Day 4: Lao Cai – Cat Cat Village – Sin Chai – Sapa (B/L/D)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight in Sapa

Arrive at Lao Cai Station and transfer to Sapa, approximately 38 km away. Enjoy breakfast at a local restaurant.

Begin a trek down into the valley for approximately 5 km. Along the route, observe H’mong villagers working in the rice fields and see local animals such as chickens, water buffaloes and pot-bellied pigs.

Visit the old hydroelectric power station built during the French colonial period and stop at a waterfall for a rest.

Continue on foot to Sin Chai Village, where you can observe the way of life of the Black H’mong community, including traditional weaving and indigo-dyeing practices.

Return to Sapa Town for an overnight stay.

Day 5Day 5: Sapa – Lao Chai – Ta Van – Hanoi (B/L)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch | Overnight in Hanoi

After breakfast, set out on a trek along buffalo paths and village trails through Lao Chai and Ta Van.

Meet Black H’mong and Dzay communities and gain an insight into their daily life. The route offers expansive views across the valley, surrounded by layered rice terraces.

After the trek, transfer by limousine bus back to Hanoi. Arrive at the hotel at approximately 8:00 PM for an overnight stay.

Day 6Day 6: Hanoi – Tam Coc, Ninh Binh – Hanoi (B/L)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch | Overnight in Hanoi

After breakfast, depart for Ninh Binh, enjoying views of the northern countryside along the way.

Arrive in Hoa Lu at approximately 10:00 AM and visit the temples of King Dinh and King Le, dating from the 10th century.

After lunch, board a bamboo boat rowed by local people along the Hoang Long River to visit Tam Coc, known as the “Three Caves”. Enjoy the peaceful scenery of rice paddies and limestone mountains, particularly beautiful during the April and September rice seasons.

Return to the harbour and travel back to Hanoi. Enjoy free time for shopping in the Old Quarter and Dong Xuan Market.

Day 7Day 7: HanoI (B)

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, enjoy free time at leisure before checking out from the hotel.

At the arranged time, transfer to Noi Bai International Airport for your departure flight home.

We have done a private tour going to: HOA LU TEMPLE - MUA CAVE - TRANG AN Miami was our lovely tour guide. Her English was excellent and clear. She hosting us in the perfect possible way. We had a late arrival the day before and left us to rest during the 2,5 hour drive.  Verified Perfect Ninh Binh day with Hai — Hoa Lu, Hang Mua & Trang An
We did a private day tour with Hai covering Hoa Lu, Hang Mua Cave, and Trang An, and it was an excellent day. Hai was punctual, easy to talk to, and very well organized. At Hoa Lu he explained the history of the ancient capital clearly without making it feel like a lecture. At Hang Mua he paced the climb well, gave us time for photos at the viewpoint, and kept the visit comfortable. Trang An was the highlight — the boat ride through the caves and temples was beautiful, and Hai handled the timing and logistics smoothly so we didn’t feel rushed. What stood out most was how personal the day felt. Hai adjusted the schedule to us, made practical suggestions, and was patient and professional from start to finish. If you want to see Hoa Lu, Hang Mua, and Trang An in one day with a reliable private guide, we highly recommend Hai. We would book him again.

Are there any age restrictions for this tour?

We have a minimum age requirement of 18 years old to join the tour. Group members aged 16-17 years old are welcome to join the tour but only with a family member that will act as their guardian whilst on tour. Aside from that, no age requirements at all!
